France on Wednesday began a contentious debate over how to restore the Notre Dame Cathedral. At issue is whether the French government should seek to re-create the famed cathedral as it was before the fire, sticking as close as possible to the 850-year-old structure’s pre-blaze style. Many preservationists had assumed that it would. But Prime Minister Édouard Philippe upended expectations with an announcement Wednesday afternoon that France would launch an international competition for proposals to replace the spire that collapsed into Monday’s inferno. He also raised the prospect of a 21st-century twist atop a 12th-century creation. French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday night that he wanted the work to be done within five years, an extremely fast pace for a project of monumental scale that will involve hundreds, if not thousands, of craftsmen, carpenters, masons and others working inch by inch. Some experts have estimated that the reconstruction work could take a decade or more. On Wednesday, Notre Dame’s rector announced that the cathedral would probably be closed for five to six years.
